Abstract
This study was motivated by students’ low interest in learning history, which was caused by the use of monotonous and less innovative learning media. The purpose of this study is to provide a foundation for developing audio-visual learning media in the form of Video Memes to support the improvement of students’ interest in learning history in Grade XI at SMA N 1 Gunung Talang. The data analysis technique used in this study was quantitative descriptive analysis, supported by qualitative data. Data were collected through observations and written interviews conducted via Google Forms with 30 students and one history teacher. The results of the teacher interview indicated that students’ lack of interest in learning history was caused by the limited variety of learning media. Students’ interest was reflected in the dominance of the emotional involvement indicator (66,7%) and identity connection (40,0%). Meanwhile, aspects of interest that reflected active engagement and in-depth understanding, such as cognitive engagement (30,0%), behavioral engagement (43,3%), and perceptions of the relevance of history (6,7%), were relatively low. In the media needs survey, most students showed an interest in audio-visual media, particularly videos, with 21 out of 30 students (70%) expressing this preference. Therefore, innovative audio-visual learning media are needed because they have the potential to increase students’ interest in learning. The findings of this needs analysis serve as the foundation for developing Video Meme audio-visual media to support the improvement of students’ interest in learning history, particularly historical topics taught in Grade XI at SMA N 1 Gunung Talang.
